The Method

The Class is a music-driven somatic exercise method founded in 2011 by Taryn Toomey to regulate the nervous system and release stuck energy by moving the physical body.

The Method

Guided by our brilliant, extensively trained Teachers, each Class integrates a unique combination of movement, breath, music, and sound release to create physical, mental, and emotional openings.

Mental

  • Intentional engagement of specific muscle groups for extended periods of time builds strength and resilience in the physical body.
  • Traditional cardio blasts (jumping jacks, burpees) and frequent interval training (systematically raising and lowering the heart rate) stretch your cardiovascular system, produce sweat, and detoxification.
  • Activate the parasympathetic nervous system—plus recenter and restore the body—through stretching, breathwork, and meditation.
  • Practice interoception and proprioception, both important aspects of body awareness, to better understand the relationship between the physical body's movements and its internal state.
  • Reset and restore your nervous system through a combination of breathwork, meditation, and movement that fosters an understanding of embodiment.
  • The Class integrates breathwork and sound release to create space for emotional regulation and stress release.
  • Harnessing the rhythm of breath is scientifically proven to effectively self-regulate and improve mood.
  • Build emotional intelligence by gathering the tools needed to recognize, face, and understand the spectrum of emotions that might arise in everyday life.
  • The Class builds new neural pathways and improves brain plasticity by utilizing scientifically supported and research-backed techniques.
  • Self-reflection creates opportunities for a deeper connection to self and soul.
  • An opportunity to identify thought and thought programming.
  • Resetting the nervous system can strengthen the mind’s ability to focus and return to the present moment with more clarity and intentionality.

The Music

Music and artistry are embedded into the ethos of The Class. Every practice is individually choreographed to an intentional soundtrack curated by the Teacher. In 2020, The Class launched music collaboration partnerships, which have since become one of the most celebrated collections in our Digital Studio. We hold immense gratitude to all of the artists, past and future, who musically come into this space and share their gifts with us.

FAQs

  • What modalities or techniques does The Class draw from? Is it similar to any other workouts?
The Class is rooted in somatic movement, using the body as a tool to bring awareness to where tension is stored. Rather than focusing on perfecting external form, the practice is guided by sensation, layering in breathwork and vocal release to help clear habitual patterns, build strength, improve mobility, and cultivate presence. The movements may feel familiar if you’ve practiced Pilates, Yoga, Cardiovascular training, or bodyweight exercises such as squats, planks, core sequences, and jumping jacks and burpees
